COLUMNS, NATURE AND ART
The project describes a Museum of Contemporary Art at a very prominent plot along Beijing¡¯s eastern 4th Ring Road. A strong formal gesture of vertical columns on the facade offers a shifted glimpse into the inside of the museum. The columns are arranged in a circular manner, attracting visitors to the entrance and naturally guiding them into the lobby. On entering the Building, guests walkthrough a ¡°forest of columns¡± towards the heart of the museum, passing by a cafe and a bookshop on the way.
A continuing walkway through the museum leads visitors from the lobby through the main exhibition halls back to the lobby, where a large spiral staircase takes them further to the second level. A flexible layout on the second floor features a temporary exhibition space and a multipurpose area for painting classes or art happenings. A restaurant and bar on the 3rd floor closes the continuous walkway through the building. The restaurant is able to function separately from the museum, and is also accessible after opening hours of the exhibitions.
